Excursion to the Conturines cave (every Thursday from the 7th of July to the 15th of September 2022)

Guided excursion to the Conturines cave with Nature Park experts

Guided hike to the spectacular Conturines cave (2.750m), where fossils of Ursus ladinicus, the Ladin cave bear, were found.

The cave, 200m long and located at 2.750m above see level, was discovered in 1987. In its inside fossilised bones of a hitherto unknown cave bear species were found. The species was subsequently named Ursus ladinicus.
You have to ascend over 1.000 meters, mostly on steep scree slopes, to reach the discovery site – which is the world highest cave bear discovery place. Even though the climb is demanding, hikers are completely rewarded by the sight of the wonderful stalactites inside the cave, where 40.000 years ago the extinct herbivore bears used to live.
Route description:
From the Capanna Alpina (1.726m), San Cassiano, on path n°11 to Col de Locia (2.069), then in direction of the Gran Fanes hut. The tour then continues along an unmarked trail through mountain pines and across steep screes, eventually reaching the Conturines cave (2.750m). After visiting the cave, the way back follows the same route.
Inside the cave you need warm clothing (temperatures of approx. 1°C) and a headlamp. We recommend to carry hiking sticks to walk across the scree terrain.
